\1Cvc Word Picture Matching Worksheet 12\2

The quantity picture shows ten small circles arranged in two rows. Men is plural and labels the two adults together. Jet is the aircraft, and pen names the writing tool. These meanings distinguish number, people and object vocabulary on one page.

The short e word and picture matching worksheet choices require more than spotting e. Men, pen and ten change their first consonants; jet needs j first and t last. Its ending breaks the repeated en pattern.

What is included?

  • Four printed word choices: men, pen, ten, jet.
  • Four pictures down the left side, ordered pen, jet, men, ten.
  • A matching activity on page 1 and a separate answer key with the correct connections on page 2.
  • The four-page PDF also contains a thank-you page and terms of use.

Teaching this worksheet

Count the circles together to establish ten, then blend t-e-n and find the printed word. Connect it to the bottom picture in the left column. Compare pen by listening for p at the beginning.

When using short e word and picture matching worksheet, discuss the two adults as men. Read m-e-n, then contrast jet and listen through to its final t. Draw a line to the aircraft picture.

Check the completed routes against page 2. Ask pupils to reread each label after matching, including ten without recounting if the quantity is already clear. Keep reading and quantity recognition distinct in your observations.

Picture-word activities

  • Build men, pen and ten by changing only the first tile.
  • Count a separate group of ten objects and find the matching printed number word.
  • Read jet beside ten, comparing which end contains t.

Teaching notes and quick assessment

On this CVC word picture matching worksheet 12, notice whether the pupil reads the whole word or matches from the shared ending and picture position. Ask for the difference between men and pen before accepting either line.

A secure reader blends all four labels, identifies the distinguishing grapheme and checks the connection for jet by rereading it. This follows the decoding emphasis in the Department for Education reading framework. Keep the answer page hidden until all four choices are explained.

Support and next steps

Supply men orally if the learner says people, and jet if they say plane. For ten, counting the circles together may resolve a quantity difficulty without giving the written choice.

After short e word and picture matching worksheet, dictate pen and jet on spare paper. They share e but differ at both ends, so pupils must recall two distinct consonant pairs.

Use short e word and picture matching worksheet when its short-e correspondences are secure, with counting or vocabulary help where needed. The wider distinction between decoding words and understanding their meaning is discussed in the Department for Education reading framework.

Worksheet 12 answers

The answer page shows the correct connections. Reading the activity pictures from top to bottom:

  1. pen matches word 2 in the right-hand column.
  2. jet matches word 4 in the right-hand column.
  3. men matches word 1 in the right-hand column.
  4. ten matches word 3 in the right-hand column.
