The rib illustration shows the rib area of a skeleton, while nib points to the writing tip of a pen. The hiding picture represents hid rather than bed or cat. Introduce the intended short labels before asking learners to choose among the printed words.

The short i word and picture matching worksheet task contrasts b, n and r at the beginning of the rhyming group. Hid adds h initially and d finally. Bib also repeats b at both ends, unlike the other choices.

What is included?

  • Four printed word choices: bib, nib, rib, hid.
  • Four pictures down the left side, ordered rib, hid, nib, bib.
  • A matching activity on page 1 and a separate answer key with the correct connections on page 2.
  • The four-page PDF also contains a thank-you page and terms of use.

Teaching this worksheet

Start with bib and blend b-i-b. Connect it to the bottom picture on the left, drawing attention to b in both the first and last positions. Compare nib by changing the beginning.

When using short i word and picture matching worksheet, point to the pen’s nib and the skeleton’s rib area to establish exactly what is named. Read hid in a short sentence about hiding, then locate h and d in the written label.

Check the finished connections on page 2. If hid is mistaken for an ib word, listen to its final d. Reread the corrected label with the picture after changing the line.

Picture-word activities

  • Make bib and rib with tiles and swap the first b for r.
  • Point to a pen nib before reading nib, distinguishing the part from the whole pen.
  • Read hid beside bib and compare both outer letters.

Teaching notes and quick assessment

On this CVC word picture matching worksheet 15, notice whether the pupil reads the whole word or matches from the shared ending and picture position. Ask for the difference between bib and nib before accepting either line.

A secure reader blends all four labels, identifies the distinguishing grapheme and checks the connection for hid by rereading it. This follows the decoding emphasis in the Department for Education reading framework. Keep the answer page hidden until all four choices are explained.

Support and next steps

Supply nib and rib orally if those body-part or object-part words are unfamiliar. For hid, describe the hiding scene using the exact printed word so the pupil does not search for hide.

After short i word and picture matching worksheet, dictate bib and hid away from the sheet. Ask the learner to check where b or d belongs and to reread each completed word.

Select short i word and picture matching worksheet when short i and the required consonants have been introduced. Teach unfamiliar labels alongside the decoding practice, using the principles in the Department for Education reading framework.

Worksheet 15 answers

  2. hid matches word 4 in the right-hand column.
  3. nib matches word 2 in the right-hand column.
  4. bib matches word 1 in the right-hand column.
