The fish’s intended label is cod, and the peas are shown within a pod. Nod names the head movement rather than the person. Rod is the long straight object in the second picture. Establish each short label before asking for independent matching.

On the short o word and picture matching worksheet page, c, n, p and r change while o and d remain. The pod appears at the top of the pictures even though pod is third in the word list.

What is included?

  • Four printed word choices: cod, nod, pod, rod.
  • Four pictures down the left side, ordered pod, rod, nod, cod.
  • A matching activity on page 1 and a separate answer key with the correct connections on page 2.
  • The four-page PDF also contains a thank-you page and terms of use.

Teaching this worksheet

Start with pod. Point to the casing around the peas, blend p-o-d and find the corresponding printed word. Compare rod, retaining od while changing the first sound.

During short o word and picture matching worksheet, demonstrate a nod and read n-o-d. Name the fish cod, then blend c-o-d before connecting it to the bottom picture.

Review with page 2 once pupils have tried all four. Ask the learner to say the exact label while following each line. If they say fish rather than cod, revisit vocabulary before deciding whether decoding was inaccurate.

Picture-word activities

  • Make pod and rod with letter tiles, swapping p for r.
  • Mime nod after reading the word, connecting the label to its action.
  • Read cod and pod with the pictures covered and compare their beginnings.

Teaching notes and quick assessment

On this CVC word picture matching worksheet 24, notice whether the pupil reads the whole word or matches from the shared ending and picture position. Ask for the difference between cod and nod before accepting either line.

A secure reader blends all four labels, identifies the distinguishing grapheme and checks the connection for rod by rereading it. This follows the decoding emphasis in the Department for Education reading framework. Keep the answer page hidden until all four choices are explained.

Support and next steps

Introduce cod as the fish name and pod as the case holding the peas. For nod, use a visible head movement to establish the action without choosing the written answer for the pupil.

After short o word and picture matching worksheet, dictate nod and rod on blank paper. Check the initial letters separately from their shared od ending, then read both labels back.

Choose short o word and picture matching worksheet after short o and its consonants are secure. The relationship between accurate word reading and oral vocabulary is addressed in the Department for Education reading framework.

Worksheet 24 answers

The answer page shows the correct connections. Reading the activity pictures from top to bottom:

  1. pod matches word 3 in the right-hand column.
  2. rod matches word 4 in the right-hand column.
  3. nod matches word 2 in the right-hand column.
  4. cod matches word 1 in the right-hand column.
