\1Cvc Word Picture Matching Worksheet 30\2

Hub names the centre of the wheel rather than the whole wheel. Sub is the short label for the submarine, while rub describes the hand action. Cub identifies the young animal. Introduce these specific meanings before independent matching.

On the short u word and picture matching worksheet page, c, h, r and s precede the constant ub. The hub picture appears first on the left, followed by sub, cub and rub, unlike the word-column order.

What is included?

  • Four printed word choices: cub, hub, rub, sub.
  • Four pictures down the left side, ordered hub, sub, cub, rub.
  • A matching activity on page 1 and a separate answer key with the correct connections on page 2.
  • The four-page PDF also contains a thank-you page and terms of use.

Teaching this worksheet

Point to the young bear and say cub. Blend c-u-b before finding its printed label and joining it to the third picture. Compare sub by changing the beginning to s.

When teaching short u word and picture matching worksheet, identify the central part of the wheel as hub. Demonstrate rubbing your hands, then read rub and connect it to the hand drawing.

Review page 2 after pupils finish. If wheel or bear is given as a label, revisit the intended vocabulary before checking the word reading. Ask learners to read each complete printed choice while tracing its connection.

Picture-word activities

  • Build cub and sub with tiles, changing only the first consonant.
  • Point to the hub at the centre of the wheel and read its short label.
  • Read rub and hub without illustrations, comparing r and h.

Teaching notes and quick assessment

On this CVC word picture matching worksheet 30, notice whether the pupil reads the whole word or matches from the shared ending and picture position. Ask for the difference between cub and hub before accepting either line.

A secure reader blends all four labels, identifies the distinguishing grapheme and checks the connection for sub by rereading it. This follows the decoding emphasis in the Department for Education reading framework. Keep the answer page hidden until all four choices are explained.

Support and next steps

Supply hub orally while indicating the wheel’s centre. Explain sub as the shortened submarine label and cub as a young animal. Those meanings can be provided without showing which written answer to choose.

After short u word and picture matching worksheet, dictate rub and cub on blank paper. Check the different beginnings, then blend both labels with the shared ub ending.

Choose short u word and picture matching worksheet after introducing short u and the relevant consonants. The relationship between taught word-reading knowledge and vocabulary support is discussed in the Department for Education reading framework.

Worksheet 30 answers

  2. sub matches word 4 in the right-hand column.
  3. cub matches word 1 in the right-hand column.
  4. rub matches word 3 in the right-hand column.
