The workbook covers ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen and twenty. Its glossary defines each quantity as one more than the preceding number and supplies a counting sentence. This gives an adult a concrete starting point before pencil practice.

Three practice sheets carry the number words onto Foundation writing guides. The glossary uses groups of five entries, while the handwriting pages use smaller groups, so introduce the words by name rather than assuming that glossary and practice page boundaries match. Teaching numbers ten to twenty

Begin with ten counters and add one at a time. Ask the child to count the collection, find its written number name and say the glossary sentence. Contrast eleven and twelve before introducing the repeated -teen ending. Point out that thirteen and fifteen do not simply add teen to the spelling of three and five.

Model one number word on the guides. Follow the grey strip, trace the dotted strip and use the black model for independent copying. For a longer word such as seventeen, plan the whole letter sequence before writing, keeping the letters small enough to fit without squeezing the final n.

Finish by showing a quantity or numeral and asking the child to locate its word. Keep this a supported word-writing task until the spelling is secure; a neat traced word alone does not show that the quantity is understood.

Teaching and follow-up ideas

• Make a number line from ten to twenty and place handwritten word labels beside the numerals.
• Sort eleven, twelve and twenty away from the words ending in -teen, then read both groups aloud.
• Compare thirteen and thirty orally using counters; write only thirteen because thirty is outside this workbook.
• Choose two neighbouring quantities and explain which is one more before copying both number words.

Support and challenge

Start with ten, eleven and twelve using actual objects. Keep the corresponding glossary entry visible and practise one word strip at a time if a whole sheet is too much. A child can point to the correct quantity before attempting the spelling.

For greater challenge, cover the model and write a number word from memory, then check every letter against the glossary. Ask for a counting sentence using eighteen or nineteen, leaving clear spaces between the number word and the rest of the sentence.

Use this resource after counting and recognising the smaller number names. Practising numbers ten to twenty extends that earlier work while preserving the same trace-to-copy routine. Once pupils connect these spellings with quantities, use short oral comparisons and simple written number sentences as a next step.
