Explore continents and oceans handwriting
North America, South America and the ocean names create useful practice with capitals and spaces. The glossary treats Australia as a continent in the seven-continent model. Each name has a short explanation and example; a separate world map helps pupils relate those words to locations.

Teaching continents and oceans handwriting
Place a globe beside the glossary and distinguish land from ocean before locating any individual name. Find Africa and the Atlantic Ocean, read their entries, then model the capitals and spaces. Complete one handwriting strip at a time. Compare Arctic Ocean with Antarctica carefully because similar beginnings do not identify the same place.

Meaning: A continent crossed by the equator.
Example: Africa lies south of Europe.
Antarctica
Meaning: The icy continent around the South Pole.
Example: Antarctica surrounds the South Pole.
Asia
Meaning: The largest continent by land area.

Europe
Meaning: A continent west of Asia.

Teaching and follow-up ideas
- Sort the twelve handwritten names into continents and oceans.
- Find North America and South America and compare the shared part of their names.
- Use the equator on a globe when discussing the Africa entry.
Support and challenge
Begin with the continent where pupils live and a nearby ocean, then build outwards. Provide a clear model for the longer two-word names. After copying is secure, ask pupils to explain the difference between a continent and an ocean using a labelled map; tracing alone does not establish geographical location.
Support the capital starts and lower-case letters in geographical names with NSW Department of Education handwriting resources.
