This free 4 line paper gives you 9 printable English handwriting sheets as Word documents: four lines in every row with a red baseline, and a clear gap between rows, in UK, US and Australian sizes. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Four-line paper is how I teach ascenders and descenders explicitly: every letter has its own band, so children can see exactly how far a tall letter or a tail should reach.
In this guide, you’ll find what each of the four lines is for, who 4 line paper suits best, and how to print it at its true size.

What the Four Lines Are For
- Line 1 (top): the height of capitals and tall letters such as b, d, h and k.
- Line 2: the top of small letters such as a, c, m and o.
- Line 3 (red): the baseline that every letter sits on.
- Line 4 (bottom): how far tails go on g, j, p, q and y.
Who 4 Line Paper Suits
Four-line paper suits children learning joined handwriting, older learners tidying up their writing, and anyone learning to write English letters, because every part of every letter has its own line.
How to Print at the Right Size
Four lines in one row means small differences show up fast, so print at 100% and compare one row with the size in the file name before you copy a set.
FAQs

When should children move from four lines to two?
Once letter heights are consistent without the extra guides, usually around age seven or eight.
