These free fraction worksheets give you 16 Word documents on US Letter and A4: shade the fraction with bars, shade the fraction with circles, what fraction is shaded, and equivalent fractions, each in colour and in black and white. Every template is human-made by a teacher: I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead, and I designed and built each one myself in Microsoft Word, then printed and measured them to check the sizes on the label.
In this guide, you’ll find which fraction worksheet suits each stage, how to use the answer pages, and how to support children who find fractions tricky.

What Are Fraction Worksheets?
Fraction worksheets use pictures to show that a fraction is equal parts of a whole. Shading bars and circles helps children see what the top and bottom numbers mean before they work with fractions as numbers.
Which Fraction Worksheet Should You Use?
- Shade the fraction, bars: ten bars split into halves to tenths, with the fraction to colour under each.
- Shade the fraction, circles: nine circles split into halves to eighths, for the same skill with a different shape.
- What fraction is shaded?: 12 shaded bars and circles; children write the fraction in the boxes.
- Equivalent fractions: shade a second bar to match the first, then fill in the missing number, such as 1/2 = 2/4.
- Answer pages: every worksheet has a second page with the answers drawn in.
- Black and white versions: every template also comes in a printer-friendly black and white version with grey headings, to save ink.
How to Use the Fraction Worksheets
- Start with shading bars, then circles, then naming shaded fractions.
- Print the first page, and keep the answer page for marking.
- Ask children to count the equal parts out loud before they shade.
- Move on to equivalent fractions when halves, thirds and quarters are secure.
The bottom number tells you how many equal parts, and the top number tells you how many to shade. Fold paper strips to show halves and quarters before the worksheet. UK schools say quarters and US schools often say fourths: both mean four equal parts.
How to Print at the Right Size
- Open the template in Word and press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on a Mac).
- Choose the paper size in the file name: A4 for UK and Australian sheets, US Letter for US sheets.
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page.
- Print one sheet and measure a row with a ruler before you print a class set.
Every sheet keeps a 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) margin on all sides, so nothing is cut off on home inkjets, school laser printers or older printers with a wide edge.
