What Are Place Value Worksheets?
Place value worksheets help children understand that a digit’s value depends on where it sits: the 4 in 346 means 40. Breaking numbers into hundreds, tens and ones builds the understanding children need for column addition, subtraction and rounding.
Which Place Value Worksheet Should You Use?
- Place value chart: write the hundreds, tens and ones for 12 numbers, then the expanded form.
- Expanded form: write 16 numbers as hundreds plus tens plus ones. The A4 files call this partitioning, as UK schools do.
- Place value missing numbers: fill in the missing hundreds, tens, ones or total in 20 sums.
- Rounding: round 20 numbers to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100.
- Answer pages: every worksheet has a second page with all the answers.
- Black and white versions: every template also comes in a printer-friendly black and white version with grey headings, to save ink.
How to Use the Place Value Worksheets
- Start with the place value chart, then move on to expanded form and missing numbers.
- Print the first page, and keep the answer page for marking.
- Let children use base-ten blocks or a place value chart beside the sheet while they learn.
- To make a new version, click any number in Word, change it, and update the answer page to match.
Watch for zeros: children often write 405 as 400 + 5 and forget the zero tens, which is a good moment to talk about place holders. For rounding, remind children that 5 rounds up, so 345 rounds to 350.
How to Print at the Right Size
- Open the template in Word and press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on a Mac).
- Choose the paper size in the file name: A4 for UK and Australian sheets, US Letter for US sheets.
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page.
- Print one sheet and measure a row with a ruler before you print a class set.
Every sheet keeps a 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) margin on all sides, so nothing is cut off on home inkjets, school laser printers or older printers with a wide edge.
