This free number line pack gives you 10 printable sheets as Word documents, each with six number lines: 0 to 10, 0 to 20, 0 to 100 in tens or in fives, and a blank number line to label yourself, on A4 or US Letter. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Number lines are how I teach adding and subtracting before children are ready for written methods, so these include both ready-numbered lines and blank ones for jumps.
In this guide, you’ll find which number line suits which age, how to show adding and subtracting with jumps, and how to print the lines evenly.

Which Number Line to Use
- 0 to 10: first counting, one more and one less, number bonds to 10.
- 0 to 20: adding and subtracting within 20 and bridging through 10.
- 0 to 100 in tens: counting in tens and rounding to the nearest 10.
- 0 to 100 in fives: counting in fives, with tens labelled and fives marked.
- Blank number line: write your own start and end, including negative numbers or fractions.
How to Add and Subtract on a Number Line
- Find the first number and mark it with a dot.
- To add, draw jumps to the right. To subtract, draw jumps to the left.
- Count the jumps as you go, then read the number where you land.
For 8 + 5, start at 8 and make five jumps to land on 13. Older children can jump 2 to reach 10, then 3 more, which is the same method used in mental maths.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print in landscape as the file is set up, so the line runs the full width of the page. Squeezing it onto portrait makes the jumps too small.
