This free ten frame pack gives you 6 printable sheets as Word documents: four large single ten frames, five double ten frames for numbers to 20, and six five frames for early counting, on A4 or US Letter. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Ten frames are how I help children see numbers rather than count them one by one, which is the start of number sense.
In this guide, you’ll find how to use a ten frame with counters, when to use five and double frames, and how to print the boxes at full size.
What’s in the Ten Frame Templates
| Paper | Version | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 4 per Page | Making 10 and number bonds |
| A4 | Double, 5 per Page | Numbers to 20 |
| A4 | Five Frames, 6 per Page | First counting to 5 |
| US Letter | 4 per Page | Making 10 and number bonds |
| US Letter | Double, 5 per Page | Numbers to 20 |
| US Letter | Five Frames, 6 per Page | First counting to 5 |

👉 The boxes are big enough for standard counters, cubes or small erasers, so the sheets work as a mat as well as a worksheet.
How to Use a Ten Frame
- Fill the top row from left to right before starting the bottom row.
- Place counters to show a number, then ask how many more make 10.
- Flash a filled ten frame for a second and ask children to say the number without counting.
- Draw dots in the boxes on the printed sheet for a written record.
Five Frames and Double Ten Frames
- Five frame: one row of five boxes for children counting to 5 for the first time.
- Ten frame: two rows of five for number bonds to 10 and spotting numbers quickly.
- Double ten frame: two ten frames side by side to show teen numbers as 10 and some more.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print on card if you can, so the frames survive being used with counters again and again.
