These free reading comprehension templates give you 16 Word documents on US Letter and A4: a mixed question sheet, a reading skills sheet, and fiction and non-fiction comprehension frames, each in colour and in black and white. Every template is human-made by a teacher: I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead, and I designed and built each one myself in Microsoft Word, then printed and measured them to check the sizes on the label.
In this guide, you’ll find which template suits each text, how to add your own passage, and how to use the question types in guided reading.

What Is a Reading Comprehension Template?
A reading comprehension template is a ready-made page of questions that works with any text. You add the passage, and the questions cover the skills good readers use: finding information, working out word meanings, making inferences and predictions, and summarising.
Which Reading Comprehension Template Should You Use?
- Reading comprehension: a passage box and five mixed questions, for any short text.
- Reading skills questions: six skill questions for any book. The A4 version uses the VIPERS headings that UK schools use, and the US version uses key details, author’s purpose and main idea.
- Fiction comprehension: characters, setting, problem, prediction and opinion, for stories and extracts.
- Non-fiction comprehension: main idea, facts, new words, a question and a summary, for information texts.
- Black and white versions: every template also comes in a printer-friendly black and white version with grey headings, to save ink.
How to Use the Reading Comprehension Templates
- Choose the template that matches the text: fiction, non-fiction or any text.
- Paste or type the passage into the box, or give children the book.
- Edit the blanks in the questions, such as the word to explain, to fit your text.
- Print one copy per child, or display it for a whole-class discussion.
Choose passages of about 100 to 300 words for one sheet. Model one answer first, pointing to the evidence in the text. Copyright stays with the author of any passage you add, so use texts your school is allowed to copy.
How to Print at the Right Size
- Open the template in Word and press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on a Mac).
- Choose the paper size in the file name: A4 for UK and Australian sheets, US Letter for US sheets.
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page.
- Print one sheet and measure a row with a ruler before you print a class set.
Every sheet keeps a 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) margin on all sides, so nothing is cut off on home inkjets, school laser printers or older printers with a wide edge.
