This free multiplication chart gives you 8 printable sheets as Word documents: a complete multiplication table (times tables chart) to 12 x 12 and 10 x 10, and blank grids with only the headings for practice and tests, on A4 or US Letter. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. I made the blank grids because filling in a multiplication table yourself sticks far better than reading a finished one: we time it each week and watch the times tables grow.
In this guide, you’ll find how to read a multiplication chart, the patterns worth pointing out, and how to use the blank grids.

👉 The 12 x 12 chart covers the times tables children learn by the end of primary school in the UK and Australia. The 10 x 10 chart is a gentler start.
How to Read a Multiplication Table
- Find the first number in the shaded column on the left.
- Find the second number in the shaded row along the top.
- Follow the row and column until they meet. That square is the answer.
For example, 7 down the side and 8 along the top meet at 56. The multiplication chart works both ways, so 8 x 7 lands on the same answer.
Patterns to Spot on a Multiplication Chart
- Square numbers: the diagonal from the top left (1, 4, 9, 16 and so on).
- Mirror image: each side of that diagonal is the same, so there are only half as many facts to learn.
- Fives and tens: answers end in 0 or 5, and in 0 for the tens.
- Nines: up to 9 x 10, the digits of each answer add up to 9 (18, 27, 36).
How to Use the Blank Multiplication Chart
The blank multiplication chart keeps the numbers along the top and side but leaves every answer empty. Children fill in one table at a time, or the whole grid as a timed challenge, then check against the filled chart.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print the filled chart once for each child to keep in their maths book, and the blank grid fresh for every practice session.
FAQs
What is the difference between the 10 x 10 and 12 x 12 charts?
The 12 x 12 chart covers the 11 and 12 times tables, which the UK curriculum expects by the end of Year 4.
How do I use the blank multiplication grid?
Children fill in the answers from memory, which makes it a quick times tables test.
Is a multiplication chart the same as a multiplication table?
Yes. A multiplication chart, multiplication table, multiplication grid and times tables chart are all names for the same grid of times tables.
Should I use the 12 x 12 or 10 x 10 chart?
Use 10 x 10 when children are starting out, and 12 x 12 once they are learning the 11 and 12 times tables.
How do I use the blank chart as a test?
Print it, set a time limit and let children fill in the answers, then check with the filled chart.
Why is the multiplication table useful?
It shows every times table at once, so children can spot patterns such as the square numbers on the diagonal.
Conclusion
This multiplication chart gives you times table grids for reference and for practice in one place, human-made by a teacher and ready to print from Word.
