These free ground grass sky templates give you 18 printable handwriting sheets as Word documents: each row is split into a blue sky band, a green grass band and a brown ground band, with sun, boat and water and colour-coded line versions too, in UK, US and Australian sizes. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Ground, grass and sky paper turns letter size into a picture children remember: I have used it for years with pupils who find plain lines too abstract.
In this guide, you’ll find how to teach letter placement with the three bands, which version suits your class, and how to print the colours at their true size.

How to Teach with Ground Grass Sky
- Grass letters such as a, c, e and o stay in the green band.
- Sky letters such as b, d, h and k grow up into the blue sky.
- Ground letters such as g, j, p and y dig down into the brown ground.
- Say it aloud: “start in the grass, up to the sky” helps children remember each letter’s shape.
Three Versions to Choose From
- Ground, grass and sky: blue, green and brown bands.
- Sun, boat and water: yellow, red and blue bands for a change of theme.
- Colour-coded lines: a blue top line with a sun mark and a green baseline with a grass mark, for children ready to move on from full colour bands.
How to Print at the Right Size
The green, blue and brown bands are the whole point, so print in colour. Load plain white paper; coloured paper dulls the bands and makes the zones harder to see.
