This free isometric paper gives you 8 printable sheets as Word documents: isometric grid paper and isometric dot paper for drawing cubes, 3D shapes and design sketches, in metric sizes on A4 and inch sizes on US Letter. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. I use isometric paper in maths for drawing 3D shapes and cube models, so I made both the line and the dot versions in metric and imperial spacings.
In this guide, you’ll find the difference between isometric grid and dot paper, how to draw a cube on it, and how to print the angles correctly.
What’s in the Isometric Paper Templates
| Country | Design | Size | Age guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | Isometric Paper | 1 cm | Drawing 3D shapes, larger triangles |
| A4 | Isometric Paper | 5 mm | Detailed 3D drawings and designs |
| A4 | Isometric Dot Paper | 1 cm dots | Cubes and 3D shapes, cleaner page |
| A4 | Isometric Dot Paper | 5 mm dots | Detailed work, cleaner page |
| US Letter | Isometric Paper | 1/2 in | Drawing 3D shapes, larger triangles |
| US Letter | Isometric Paper | 1/4 in | Detailed 3D drawings and designs |
| US Letter | Isometric Dot Paper | 1/2 in dots | Cubes and 3D shapes, cleaner page |
| US Letter | Isometric Dot Paper | 1/4 in dots | Detailed work, cleaner page |

👉 The size is the distance between dots or the length of each triangle side. Every line is either vertical or at 30 degrees to the horizontal.
Isometric Grid or Isometric Dot Paper?
- Isometric grid: full triangle lines make it easy to follow the three directions of a 3D shape. Best for beginners.
- Isometric dot paper: dots only, so finished drawings look cleaner. Best once children can see the shapes.
- Larger spacing (1 cm, 1/2 in): young learners, building-block models and maths lessons on volume.
- Smaller spacing (5 mm, 1/4 in): detailed design and technology sketches and room plans.
How to Draw a Cube on Isometric Paper
- Draw one vertical edge along a vertical line.
- From the top and bottom of that edge, draw lines up and to the left and up and to the right, following the 30 degree lines.
- Add two more vertical edges at the ends, then join them to make the top face.
- Shade one side slightly darker so the cube looks solid.
How to Print at the Right Size
Isometric grids only work if the angles stay true, so print at actual size and never stretch the page to fit. A stretched grid makes cubes look lopsided.
FAQs
Should I use lines or dots?
Dots give a cleaner finished drawing; lines are easier for beginners to follow.
Which way up should the paper be?
Keep the vertical lines vertical: the grid only works for 3D drawings one way round.
What is isometric paper used for?
Drawing 3D shapes, cubes and models in maths, and design and technology sketches, because its lines follow the three directions of a 3D object.
What angle are the lines on isometric paper?
The lines are vertical or at 30 degrees to the horizontal, so they meet at 60 degrees and form equilateral triangles.
What is the difference between isometric and graph paper?
Graph paper has squares for flat drawings and charts; isometric paper has triangles for drawing objects in 3D.
Why are my shapes distorted when printed?
Print at 100% or Actual size on the paper size in the file name, not Fit to page.
Conclusion
This isometric paper makes cubes, models and 3D designs easy to draw accurately, human-made by a teacher and ready to print from Word.
