About this CVC colour and write worksheet

Each task pairs a picture with a small selection of letters and a writing line. Pupils must choose the three graphemes that spell pig, rat, hat or jet, then record the word in order. The answer page shows the completed choices.

What is included?

  • One printable activity page.
  • One completed answer-key page.
  • Two terms pages in the four-page PDF.

How to use this resource

Start with pig. Say the word, segment its three phonemes and let children touch the matching letters before colouring. Ask them to reread the written word after copying it. Compare rat with jet to draw attention to their different vowel sounds.

Support and challenge

Provide three counters so children can move one for each sound in hat. For challenge, cover the letter choices for jet and ask pupils to spell it independently before checking and colouring the printed letters.

Teaching notes and quick assessment

Use this CVC colour and write worksheet when children can orally segment simple words into three phonemes. Rehearse pig, rat, hat and jet, asking pupils to count the sounds before they look at the printed letter choices.

Watch the order in which each child selects graphemes. If a pupil chooses the correct letters but writes them out of sequence, return to the picture, stretch the word aloud and move one counter for each sound. Encourage rereading after every completed spelling.

For assessment, cover the choices for jet and ask the child to write it independently. A secure learner should segment, select and order the graphemes without copying. Revisit this CVC colour and write worksheet later to check retention, then ask for another word with the same middle vowel. The Department for Education reading framework gives wider guidance on systematic phonics, spelling and assessment.
