Prepare with Short A CVC Words Poster (12 Picture Words), then extend decoding with Read CVC Words Worksheet 01: Mixed Short Vowels.

Match decoded CVC sentences to pictures

The six target picture words are lab, sub, ram, mum, gum, fig. Because the sentence frames vary, pupils must use both the decoded CVC word and the surrounding meaning; the answer page displays every correct sentence-picture pair.

What is included?

  • One printable activity page.
  • One completed answer page.
  • Two terms pages in the four-page PDF.

How to use this resource

Read “This is the lab.” together and identify the word that carries the picture meaning. Ask pupils to place all six cut-outs loosely before gluing. Use “Can you see the fig?” for the final check and have the child point to the exact words that support the match.

Support and challenge

For support, work with the lab, sub and ram pictures first and mask the remaining rows. For challenge, remove one picture, ask pupils to identify which sentence cannot yet be completed, then write a new sentence for one matched image.

Resource licence

Free for personal, homeschool or single-classroom use under the terms included in the PDF. Resale, redistribution and uploading the file to another website are not permitted.
