Made by a teacherA4 and US Letter8 Word documentsFree
These free KWL chart templates give you 8 Word documents on A4 and US Letter: a classic KWL chart, a KWHL chart, a KWL plus chart with a summary box and a KWL chart for young learners. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. I start new topics with a KWL chart in my own classroom, so I built these with clear prompts under each heading and boxes big enough to write in.
In this guide, you’ll find what a kwl chart is, which version suits your lesson, and how to fill one in on screen or on paper.

What Is a KWL Chart?
A KWL chart has three columns: what I Know, what I Want to know and what I Learned. Students fill in the first two before a topic or a text, which brings back what they already know and gives them questions to read for, and the third column at the end. It works in every subject.
Which KWL Chart Should You Use?
- KWL: the classic three columns, with a short prompt under each heading.
- KWHL: adds How I will find out, for research projects that use books, websites or people.
- KWL plus: adds a summary box, so students pull together the most important things they learned.
- Young learners: big boxes with I know, I want to know and I learned, for writing or drawing.
How to Use It in Class
- Before the topic, ask students to fill in the K column with everything they already know.
- Turn their wonderings into questions in the W column.
- Teach the topic or read the text, then fill in the L column, ticking the questions they answered.
- Use the questions still unanswered as research or homework.
Correct any wrong ideas in the K column gently at the end, when students can see for themselves what they learned.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print at 100% on plain paper, one per student, or display it on the board and fill it in together as a class.
