These free letter to Santa templates give you 8 Word documents on A4 and US Letter: a lined letter, a fill-in letter for younger children, a letter with a drawing box, and a letter from Santa so you can write the reply. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. My pupils write to Santa every December, so I made letters for every kind of writer, and a reply from Santa, with holly and snowflakes I drew myself in PowerPoint from simple shapes.
In this guide, you’ll find which letter to Santa suits each child, who drew the pictures, and how to write a reply that makes Christmas Eve special.

Which Letter to Santa Should You Use?
- Lined letter to Santa: “Dear Santa,” and plenty of writing lines for children who can write a whole letter.
- Fill-in letter to Santa: sentence starters such as “My name is” and “I have been good because”, tick boxes for how good they have been, three numbered wishes and the treat they will leave out.
- Letter to Santa with drawing box: a short letter, then a big box to draw a picture for Santa.
- Letter from Santa: a reply for a parent or teacher to write, with a P.S. and “Love from Santa” already in place.
About the Illustrations
The holly and the snowflakes on these letters were drawn by Patrick Elliott in PowerPoint, using only shapes, with no clip art and no AI. The holly sits beside the drawing-box heading and the faint snowflakes stay in the page margins, so the writing lines fill the page.
No picture sits on a writing line, so every line is clear for young writers. To draw on the page in Word instead of with pens, see how to draw in Word.
How to Write a Reply from Santa
- Start with the child’s name after “Dear”, in your best curly handwriting or a festive font.
- Mention one or two things from their letter, so they know Santa read it.
- Praise something real they did this year, such as helping at home or trying hard at school.
- Add a P.S. about the reindeer, the elves or the snow at the North Pole, then fold it into an envelope.
For the envelope, the envelope templates print straight onto standard envelopes.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print one letter for each child on A4 or US Letter at 100%. Use thicker paper for the drawing box so felt tips do not show through, and keep Santa’s reply in a sealed envelope until Christmas Eve.
FAQs
Which letter should a young child use?
Use the fill-in letter. It has short sentence starters, tick boxes and three numbered wishes, so even early writers can finish it.
How do I write a reply from Santa?
Use the Letter from Santa. Type or write a few lines about the year, mention one thing from their letter, and add a P.S. about the reindeer.
Can children type their letter in Word?
Yes. Click on a line and type: the text sits on the line. Older children can type the whole letter and print it to post.
When should children write to Santa?
Late November or early December gives time to post the letter and to plan the reply before Christmas Eve.
Can I change “Love from Santa”?
Yes. Click the words and type, for example Father Christmas or Santa Claus, or add the elves’ names.
Is there a matching Christmas list?
Yes. The Christmas list templates have the same snowflake border, with a child’s list, a wish list, a present list and a card list.
