These free booklet templates give you 8 Word documents with Book fold already set up: blank, lined, story and event programme booklets, as A5 booklets on A4 and half-letter booklets on US Letter. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. I make booklets every term for assemblies, reading records and class stories, so these have Book fold set up and page numbers that skip the covers.

In this guide, you’ll find which booklet template suits your project, how to print a booklet so the pages come out in order, and how to add more pages.

Booklet template for Word: event programme booklet cover, A5 on A4

👉 Every booklet has 8 pages: a cover, six inside pages numbered 2 to 7, and a back cover. Book fold is already on, so Word puts the pages in the right order when you print.

👉 The A4 versions use UK wording, such as Programme and Running Order. The US Letter versions use US wording, such as Program and Schedule.

Which Booklet Template Should You Use?

  • Blank booklet: a cover with a title and author, and six empty pages to type anything into.
  • Lined booklet: lines on every inside page for writing journals, reading logs and notes.
  • Story booklet: a picture box and writing lines on every page, so children write and illustrate their own book.
  • Event programme: a welcome, a running order, performers and speakers, about us and thank you pages, for concerts, assemblies, weddings and events.

How to Print a Booklet Template in Word

  1. Open the booklet and press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on a Mac).
  2. Choose Print on Both Sides and Flip pages on short edge. If your printer cannot do both sides, choose Manually Print on Both Sides and turn the stack over when Word asks.
  3. Print, then fold the stack in half so page 1 is on the front.
  4. Staple twice along the fold, or sew it with a needle and thread.

For the full method with screenshots, see the guide on how to print a booklet in Word.

How to Add Pages to a Booklet

A folded booklet needs pages in fours, because each sheet of paper makes four pages. Click at the end of page 7 and press Ctrl + Enter four times to add four pages. Word keeps Book fold on and moves the back cover to the end, and the page numbers update by themselves.

FAQs

Why are there no page numbers on the covers?

The cover and back cover are their own sections, so only the inside pages are numbered 2 to 7.

Can I make the booklet A4 size instead of A5?

Yes. Print it on A3 paper with Book fold on, and each page becomes A4.

How do I add a picture to the cover?

Click inside the box on the cover, go to Insert > Pictures and choose your photo or logo.

What size is an A5 booklet?

An A5 page is 148 x 210 mm, half an A4 sheet. A half-letter page is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, half a US Letter sheet.

Why are my booklet pages in the wrong order?

The printer flipped on the long edge. Print again and choose Flip pages on short edge.

Do I need special paper?

No. Ordinary A4 or US Letter paper works. Use thicker paper or card for a sturdier cover if you like.

Conclusion

These booklet templates take the fiddly Book fold set-up out of making a booklet, human-made by a teacher and ready to fill in from Word.
