These free family tree templates give you 12 Word documents on A4 and US Letter: a three generation tree, a four generation tree, a family tree for kids with space for photos, a pedigree chart, a descendant chart and a tree with brothers and sisters. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Every year children in my school make family trees for history, so I built these with boxes big enough to write in and a version where they can draw or stick photos.
In this guide, you’ll find which family tree suits your project, how to type names and dates into the boxes, and where to start when you research your family history.
What’s in the Family Tree Templates

👉 Every name and date is a click-and-type box, and the boxes and lines are Word shapes, so you can move or copy them to add more people.
👉 The A4 children’s tree says Mum, Nan and Grandad, and the US Letter version says Mom, Grandma and Grandpa.
Which Family Tree Template Should You Use?
- Three generations: you, your parents and all four grandparents, with born and died dates. A good start for a school project.
- Four generations: back to all eight great-grandparents, on a landscape page.
- For kids: a big box for each person to draw a picture or stick a photo, with the name underneath.
- Pedigree chart: the sideways chart genealogists use, numbered 1 to 15, with born, married and died for each ancestor.
- Descendant chart: a couple at the top, then four children and eight grandchildren, for a family reunion or a special birthday.
- With siblings: grandparents, parents, you and up to three brothers or sisters.
How to Fill In a Family Tree in Word
- Open the family tree and click Name in any box, then type the person’s name.
- Click date after Born or Died and type the date, or just the year if that is all you know.
- Need another person? Click the edge of a box, press Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V, then drag the copy into place.
- To add a photo to a box, click inside it and go to Insert > Pictures, or print the tree and stick the photo on.
How to Start Researching Your Family History
Start with yourself and work backwards one generation at a time. Ask parents, grandparents and older relatives for names, dates and places, and look at birth, marriage and death certificates, old letters and family Bibles. Write down where each fact came from, so you can check it later.
When you run out of family memories, census records and birth, marriage and death indexes are the next step. In the UK, the General Register Office holds the indexes for England and Wales; in the US, state vital records offices and the National Archives hold census records.
How to Print at the Right Size
Print at 100% on plain paper, or on card for a display. Type the names in Word first for a neat chart, or print it blank for children to fill in by hand.
