This free story paper gives you 12 printable sheets as Word documents: a large picture box above rows of handwriting lines with a dotted midline, in portrait and half-and-half landscape layouts, in UK, US and Australian sizes. I’m Patrick Elliott, a teacher and Inclusion Lead. Story paper is how I get reluctant writers started: the picture box comes first, and once the picture is drawn the sentence underneath is far less daunting.
In this guide, you’ll find ideas for using story paper, which layout and size to choose, and how to print it at its true size.

Ways to Use Story Paper
- Recounts and news: draw the weekend, then write about it.
- Story planning: a picture of the main event before writing.
- Science and topic work: draw an observation and label or explain it.
- Reading responses: a favourite scene with a sentence about why.
Portrait or Half and Half?
The portrait sheets give more room for writing. The landscape half-and-half sheets give a wider picture box, which suits younger children who say more in their drawings than in words.
How to Print at the Right Size
The picture box takes the top of the page, so print portrait and keep the margins as they are. Shrinking the page makes the writing lines too tight for young hands.
FAQs
Which age is story paper for?
Mainly 4 to 7 year olds, but older pupils who are reluctant to write also benefit from drawing first.
Can children type in the lines?
The lines are made for handwriting, but you can click above a line and type if a child needs to.
What is story paper?
Paper with a space for a picture at the top and handwriting lines underneath, so children can draw and write about the same idea.
Which size should I choose?
Use the larger rows for children who are just starting to write and the smaller rows when their letters are steady.
Can I add a title or prompt?
Yes. In Word, add a text box at the top of the picture box with a title or question.
Why are the lines the wrong size when printed?
Print at 100% or Actual size on the paper in the file name, not Fit to page.
Conclusion
This story paper lets children plan with pictures and write with clear lines, human-made by a teacher and ready to print from Word.
