How to use the alphabet flashcards

Select the teaching set: Print or display only the letters pupils are currently learning. Too many cards at once can turn recognition into guessing.

Read the card together: Compare the capital and lowercase forms, name both pictures and listen carefully to the beginning of each word.

Retrieve without the prompt: Cover the picture side or turn the card over, then ask for the letter name, sound or an independently suggested example word.

Practical flashcard activities

• Place three taught cards on the table and ask pupils to hand you the one that represents a spoken sound.
• Mix capital and lowercase copies, then build matching pairs.
• Order a short run of cards and identify the missing letter.
• Sort classroom objects or picture cards beside the most suitable initial-letter flashcard.

Support and challenge

Support: Work with two strongly contrasting letters and keep the picture labels visible. Repeat the picture names before asking the learner to choose.

Challenge: Remove the labelled prompts, ask for several words beginning with the grapheme, or have pupils arrange a selected set in alphabetical order from memory.
